What to Look for When Buying a Bike Cassette
Speed Match
Your cassette must match your drivetrain and shifter speed. A 12 speed cassette will not shift on an 11 speed system, and both differ from older setups. Count the gears you have now, then buy a cassette to match.
Gear Range
Range decides how easy your lowest gear feels. An 11-32 cassette handles most hills, while an 11-50 cassette climbs the steepest trails. Pick a wider spread for mountains and loads, or a tighter one for flat, fast road riding.
Freehub Fit
Cassettes mount onto a freehub body, and the two must be compatible. Shimano, SRAM, and micro-spline systems each use a different fit. Check which freehub your wheel has before buying, since the wrong type will not seat at all.
Lockring Torque
A cassette lockring holds the gears tight against the freehub body. Fit it with the correct tool and tighten to the stamped torque figure. Too loose and the cassette rattles; too tight and you risk damaging the lockring threads.
